It’s been a while but I’m back with another upgrade for my ECX Torment. This time I am going to show how to install the new HD drive shafts, this is great for owners of the brushed versions of the truck.
First I will show the difference in the size of the drive balls, as you can see the left is the new HD vs on the right the original.
Now we need to remove the wheel, camber link, axle nut and pin.
Next we pull the outer axle out of the hub and slide the outer drive out from the inner drive as well.
Remove the pin for the inner shaft, and slide off the inner drive.
Now is a good time to inspect and clean.
Next put the new HD inner drive on the transmission shaft and install the pin.
Next slide the new outer drive in the inner driveshaft , then into the hub, install the outer pin and axle nut and you are finished.
I have tested this new setup and I have to say that the truck is more responsive to my throttle input than it was before, and i think this is due to the extra strength that doesn’t allow as much flex.
So in conclusion, if you have the old drives throw them away and go get the new HD drives, you won’t regret it.

TLR TEN-SCTE 2.0
Horizon Hobby has posted their review of the TLR TEN-SCTE 4WD Kit. It is no secret that I love the kits. This is an impressive ride, it corners like it is on rails and seems easy to drive. Horizon Hobby admits that it may have a nose down tendency when jumping, something that should be fixed by shifting the weight and/or the battery around. Hmm my birthday is only a couple of months away.
Check out TLR TEN SCTE 2.0 Build to see our previously posted time lapse video build from TLR.
Anybody have any idea what is going on at Horizon Hobby? Bill Jeric, Director of the Surface Product Development Department announced on his Facebook page that he is no longer a part of Horizon Hobby. “Hello, Facebook friends. I want to let you know that as of today I am no longer an employee of Horizon Hobby. Although not my choice to leave, I have nothing but gratitude and appreciation for the 12+ years I spent there. I have confidence in what the future holds for me and look forward to the next career steps in an industry that I truly love. Stay tuned!”
Check out RedRC.net for more details.
This is a major move as Bills influence is all over the Losi and TLR brands. Horizon Hobby does have many different brands of surface vehicles such as Team Losi Racing, Losi, ECX, and Vaterra. We wonder if the demise or major overhaul of the Losi brand is just down the road.
Vaterra: is the new kid on the block and seems to be getting really good reviews for its stylish on road and off road vehicles.
ECX: is a solid budget minded product which recently announced overhauls to electronics, driveshafts, motors and body styles and colors.
Team Losi Racing (TLR): are putting out some pretty solid racing machines which are attracting a lot of attention and gathering lots of wins.
Losi: is a reliable brand that is good on the track, but for some reason racers seem to go another route these days. Other than the Losi 5ive-T, this brand hasn’t created much excitement lately.
Bill will land on his feet. We wish him all the best and hope he is back in the RC community soon.
