The build is done and it was a lot of fun. I got to modify and/or fabricate a few parts. I painted with an airbrush for the first time. Most important, it gave me a few hours of escape from all of the snow outside. In this final part I discuss the Motor and ESC I installed, there is a quick recap of the parts I modified, a complete parts list for this project and a very quick video of the “da Buggy’s” first run in an empty parking lot on a very cold winter day.
I went with a Hobbywing EzRun System that includes a 400okv Brushless Motor, the WP-SC8 120A ESC and a LED Program Box and all the necessary hardware to do a clean install.. This system should be a nice respectful upgrade over the Traxxas Venelion System. What I really liked about this combo was the Waterproof ESC, that will allow me to run a variety of different motor options in the future. I made the purchase on eBay and was pleasantly surprised that it only took 2 weeks to arrive from Hong Kong.
I decided to solder the ESC directly to the motor, opting not to use connectors. I may regret this decision in the future but for now I’ll give this method a try, which is suppose to offer lower resistance. Will I really notice a difference??? I doubt it, I think I just took the easy route.
The Inaugural Run
It was cold, so the run was brief. I have had “da Buggy” out a few more times since this day. I am super pleased with everything to this point. The MIP CVD’s are smooth and quiet. The MIP 17mm Hex adapters simply do their job. The parts I fabricated have held up nicely in the cold temperatures. I am sad to see this project come to an end, but it is time to start working on my other RC’s. The snow for the most part should be gone in the next 3-6 weeks, so I’ve got parts to order and RC’s to ready for the upcoming season.
