I read an article in the Arizona Daily Courier which got me thinking. Should RC Planes be considered drones? This is a move the FAA is considering. Currently the US federal government considers Drones to be “Unmanned Aerial Systems. (UAS)” and technically that is why RC Planes may be getting some new restrictions in 2014.
The article states: “The Federal Aviation Administration’s only current rules dealing with R/C airplanes are found in a one-page 1981 Advisory Circular, which specifies that they must not be flown above 400 feet, and the operator must notify an airport if they fly within three miles of it. The FAA is about to issue new rules, agency spokesman Ian Gregor said. “We plan to propose a small UAS rule in 2014,” he said. “The public and other interested parties will have ample opportunity to comment on it.”
This really isn’t my area of expertise, but I am interested in this story for a couple of reasons. I am not American, but the Canadian government does keep a close eye on the American Governments activities. I also don’t fly planes, but I do dabble with a couple of RC Heli’s and planes are something that interest me and may be in my future. It is pretty easy to see why they may want to classify RC planes as Drones especially with all the technology that can go into them these days. I also understand that rules are put in place, often to protect us from ourselves, but I do believe this is a case where the government should exercise some common sense.
